I had the most wonderful experience training at Born to Roll during a holiday to Phuket in April. I originally came for some rest, but also wanted to work on my BJJ skills—having only started training two months prior, with zero martial arts background. From the start, I felt so welcomed. I reached out to Gunnar before arriving and he was such a gem—genuinely kind and helpful, and made sure I felt comfortable even though I was completely new to the sport. The gym itself is such a positive, uplifting space. It felt safe, inclusive, and encouraging, even for someone like me who’s still figuring things out and also deals with some chronic health challenges. There were times where more advanced techniques were being taught, but I never felt out of place—just supported and inspired. What really drew me to Born to Roll was the twice-weekly women’s classes, run by Lucy, who has been an absolutely incredible coach. She teaches techniques that make sense for smaller bodies or people who might not have a ton of strength or power—which was perfect for me. Her classes were fun, empowering, and honestly a huge confidence boost. That said, the morning mixed classes were just as amazing. Even with black, brown, and purple belts on the mats, everyone was super friendly and always willing to help. It never felt intimidating—just like being part of a team where everyone lifts each other up. I had my first No-Gi session, coached by Leo, and it was such a great experience. He has a calm, kind, and supportive presence with really lovely energy that makes trying something new feel much less daunting. I also booked a few private sessions with Professor Olavo, which were invaluable. Getting 1:1 time with someone so experienced really helped me understand key fundamentals and improve things like my fear of falling and general confidence on the mats. He didn’t just teach technique—he helped shift my mindset, encouraging me to trust myself more and feel less afraid of making mistakes. His love for jiu-jitsu is contagious, and he even helped me create a personalised training plan so I can keep improving once back home. In just a few weeks, I felt like I was part of a family. And honestly, my jiu-jitsu has improved so much—I’m no longer getting completely smashed in every sparring session! More importantly, I walk onto the mats with a much stronger, more positive mindset. I already miss the amazing girls and guys I trained with, and I’m planning to return later this year (or at the start of next season) to do it all again. If you're new to BJJ or just want to train in a super supportive and skilled environment, I couldn’t recommend Born to Roll more :)

I recently visited Born to Roll and had a fantastic experience. The environment was welcoming and friendly, making it easy to feel at home. The coaching staff was knowledgeable and supportive, guiding us through each technique with clarity. The class was well-structured, and the techniques taught were of high quality. Additionally, the gym itself was clean and well-maintained, adding to the overall positive experience. I highly recommend Born to Roll to anyone looking to train BJJ!

Master Class Program is 100% recommended, and here you will find some of the purest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu anywhere in the world. I spent over 3 months training at Born To Roll, specifically to go through the Master Class program with Olavo. I started training 4 years ago, competed, and got some stripes, but due to travel/life circumstances, I haven't been able to train consistently to get to blue belt and beyond like I've wanted to. Those criteria are basically what the Master Class is designed for. I walked away from Born To Roll with a better understanding of jiu-jitsu than I've ever had, a few medals from competing at a local ADCC after encouragement from Olavo, and friends I will have for the rest of my life. Whether you train here for a day or years, you're treated like family the moment you walk through the door. My training at Born To Roll was my first time visiting Thailand, and everyone went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and accommodated. Reach out to them in advance about booking a stay in the area, as they have connections you won't find on Google or travel sites and can get you some great deals. Shoutout to Gunnar, who will ensure you are taken care of whether you need a gi for class or accommodation for several months! They gym is very community oriented. Every month they host events at the Naiharn Beach that include grappling, good food and good company. There is nothing like watching the sun set over a jiu jitsu match. The coaches are amazing. Of course, there is Olavo, 6th degree Carlson Gracie black belt. His curriculum is brutally effective and old school in the best way possible. He has taught tens of thousands, if not more, students throughout his life, ranging from day 1 to professionals at the highest levels. His experience and reputation speak for themselves. Leonardo is a first-degree black belt that brings a "new school" element to the gym. He coaches both gi and no gi, and he's a master of showing a technique that may seem impossible at first, but by the end of the class, it's a staple in your game. Lucy is a brown belt who teaches women's only classes and always shares her knowledge with the rest of us. If you're a woman looking for a friendly, non-threatening environment to either start your journey or roll with other women, she is who you're looking for. At least three black belts will be in the room on any given day. Often, they are all willing to teach you something new. There is something for everyone at Born To Roll. If you're in Phuket and are interested in Jiu-Jitsu, you need to at least drop in for a class. If you want to elevate your skills in Jiu-Jitsu and maybe earn your blue belt, consider the Master Class program. If you do, show up ready to dedicate yourself to it. It is not for the faint of heart, but it will change your life.

Training here has been one of the best parts of my time in Thailand. I love the sense of community — everyone is super familiar and welcoming, and each week you meet people from all over the world. That means you get to roll with so many different styles, which really helps level up your own Jiu Jitsu game. Big thanks to Olavo, Lucy, and Ganner for all the work and energy you put into making this place what it is.

Frequently asked questions

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and how does it differ from other martial arts?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting, submission techniques, and positional control. Unlike striking-based martial arts like Muay Thai or boxing, BJJ teaches students how to control and submit opponents using leverage, technique, and timing—not strength. At Born to Roll Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Phuket, we teach students of all levels how to use joint locks, chokeholds, and strategic ground grappling to defend themselves and progress in the sport. This makes BJJ ideal for beginners, kids, and even smaller individuals looking for effective self-defense or a full-body workout.

How is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu different from Japanese jiu-jitsu?

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu (JJJ) both trace their roots to traditional martial arts from Japan, they differ in style, purpose, and training methods. Japanese Jiu-Jitsu is a classical martial art focused on self-defense, incorporating strikes, joint locks, throws, and sometimes even weapons. It's often practiced in a more traditional format with katas (pre-arranged movements) and limited sparring. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, on the other hand, evolved to specialize in ground fighting and live sparring (rolling). At Born to Roll BJJ in Phuket, students learn how to control and submit an opponent using leverage, timing, and technique, making it highly effective for self-defense and competitive grappling. BJJ is also more dynamic and adaptable for real-life situations, and it’s widely regarded as one of the most effective martial arts for smaller individuals facing larger opponents.

Why is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so effective?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is widely regarded as one of the most effective martial arts for self-defense and sport, particularly because it focuses on leverage and technique rather than brute strength. In BJJ training, practitioners learn to control and submit opponents using joint locks, chokeholds, and ground grappling, allowing individuals of all sizes to defend themselves against larger, stronger attackers. At Born to Roll Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Phuket, we emphasize live sparring and practical techniques, which makes BJJ not only effective but also adaptable for real-life self-defense situations. Moreover, BJJ’s focus on positioning and submission makes it ideal for both beginners and seasoned practitioners, offering an exciting path to progress in both self-defense and competitive sports.

Do I need to be physically fit to start BJJ?

No, you do not need to be exceptionally fit to begin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). At Born to Roll BJJ in Phuket, we welcome individuals of all fitness levels. BJJ is a versatile martial art that allows practitioners to progress at their own pace. Whether you're a beginner or have some fitness experience, BJJ can be adapted to suit your level. Over time, regular BJJ training helps improve strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, even if you start at a lower fitness level. Many students find that BJJ not only enhances their martial arts skills but also significantly boosts their overall fitness and well-being.
